Mine ended up being slightly proud but a bit of sanding takes the MDF down quickly.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01854594428032733260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-2849807475994158492012-10-02T18:30:04.218-07:002012-10-02T18:30:04.218-07:00Hi Tico, I think you're talking about the bot...Hi Tico, I think you're talking about the bottom picture. The dark is the color of the insert after routing. I'm pretty sure it's phenolic plastic so once I routed below the tan color of the finished surface the black shows up. The way the insert stays in place is due to the dovetail cut into the sides of the channel and the edge of the insert. I used a 14 degree dovetail bit for that. Let me know if I can clarify anything else.
Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01854594428032733260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-34647393485806651172012-10-01T08:16:10.469-07:002012-10-01T08:16:10.469-07:00I bought a couple of the aluminum plates that were...I bought a couple of the aluminum plates that were made like that. I use Baltic birch for my inserts. Once I am set up I make about 50 of them, lasts me a few years in my cabinet shop.
If an insert fits a little too loose add a layer of clear packing tape to the bottom. If an insert is below the surface of the throat plate put the tape on top.
I cut the end round on the bandsaw, dress it on the belt sander.Stevehttp://www.steveduncan.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-12393119808269389242012-10-01T04:34:40.486-07:002012-10-01T04:34:40.486-07:00Hi John,

How do the fixed sections on top hold to it?

Thanks,

TicoTico Vogthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15743565097341810389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-50498760436158095592012-10-01T03:35:24.075-07:002012-10-01T03:35:24.075-07:00Thanks John. I'll give that a try.
ralphRalph Boumenothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10606484453109932074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-49530535506911385362012-09-30T12:53:24.442-07:002012-09-30T12:53:24.442-07:00Hi Ralph, to make the slot I put the new insert in...Hi Ralph, to make the slot I put the new insert into the throat plate and put it into position. Possible there won't be enough clearance for the blade even when it's all the way down unless there is a relief space for it. You can overcome that one of two ways -- either put a smaller diameter blade on the saw first to start the initial path or use a smaller diameter dado head. I suppose you could also figure where the blade will be and use a router bit to create a slot where the blade will be on the bottom. Once that's done the safest way is to lower the blade, insert the throat plate and clamp it to the table. Turn on the saw and slowly raise the blade until it's been cut through. Hope that helps -- JohnJohnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01854594428032733260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3336148890444001106.post-9035178796937296102012-09-30T09:39:06.360-07:002012-09-30T09:39:06.360-07:00Hi John,

How did you make the slot for the saw blade? Doing that that caused me the most headaches making my last insert. I have three more blanks and I've been putting off making a new one.
ralphRalph Boumenothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10606484453109932074noreply@blogger.com
